Orchestra Visit

Five performers from the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra delighted us with music like The Simpsons and Peter and the Wolf. We were very lucky to hear the sounds of each instrument. We heard high and low, loud and quiet, fast and slow and even some unusual sounds.
The trombone was so shiny that the children in the front row could see their reflection!

Sculptures

We went with our buddy class room 8, to view the sculptures at Albion Place.
We saw some floating sculptures called Float 1, Float 2 and Float 3. There was even a sculpture in the trees!

The children were so inspired by one of the sculptures that they wanted to make one on their return to school.

What fun we had!

Celebrating the end of term!

Room 11 celebrated the end of term with a picnic lunch with our families at the Queen's Garden this afternoon. This was a wonderful wind down from a busy term. Many thanks to our families for their support with this and all other outings we have had this year. I have really enjoyed my time in Room 11 at Nelson Central School and look forward to meeting you all again soon. Enjoy the holidays and I wish everyone all the best for the remainder of the year.

Helicopter Visit

Last week John (Mackensey's Dad) arranged for us to visit the Rescue Helicopter at the airport. The children were thrilled to be able to sit in the pilot's seat and look out the windows. The fire engine was another favourite, especially when the water hoses were turned on! Thank you to our families who helped with transport for this visit.

Magic mirrors at the Museum

Today we visited the museum to see the Bedazzled exhibition. We really enjoyed seeing (and laughing) at ourselves through the curved mirrors. Niki showed us how the mirrors reflect and bend light. Our favourite mirror was the jelly bean mirror and the one with the levers. I hope you enjoy looking at the photos of us at the exhibition. Many thanks to our wonderful families who came along with us. Your support is appreciated.

Cheers Ginger Beers!

This term our class is learning about how to make Ginger Beer. We tasted 2 different types of ginger beer - one was more popular than the other! Today we started making a ginger beer bug which we will feed every day. This will be used make our own ginger beer. The photos are of our taste test. Do you have a recipe for Ginger beer? We would love to try some other recipes. Please e-mail us your favourite recipe

Fascinating Fun!

This morning we had an exciting time finding bugs in our garden. Sarah brought in a microscope so we could look at our bugs on the computer. The best fun was taking photos of them on the microscope and seeing them moving on the computer. Look at us looking at the bugs on the computer.

Turn the volume up on your computer when listening to the movie... it is not very loud.

Welcome to Term 3!

Wow, what a busy week we have had. Our letter this week was "Jj". On our alphabet table we had jackets, jumpers, jandals and a joke book. This week we have been doing jogs around the school getting ready for our Cross Country race. Today we made jelly and had a jelly and jellybean party. In maths we have been learning about measuring length. The children worked with buddies to see how tall they were. Have a look at our photos of us busy at work.

Oscar's Boat Building

Oscar has been at home with a cold for a few days. With help from his Mum and little sister Iris, Oscar made his own boat at home. Have a look at the movie they put together about it. We hope you will be back at school soon Oscar.

Floating our Boats

On Friday we had a challenge to see if we could make a boat that would float. We used the boxes from the shop, playdough and straws to build the boats. All the boats had a flag at the top of the mast. Most of the boats did float but two sunk. Have a look at us making our boats.
I liked making the boat by myself. Ezekiel

Pyjama Day

To celebrate learning about the letter "Pp" this week, our syndicate had a pyjama day today. The teachers and children came to school wearing pyjamas, slippers and pillows. We really enjoyed sharing our night wear with the rest of the school. When the bell went this morning we turned off the lights and had another snooze. This is what we looked like. I hope you enjoy our photos.

Wild About Water

This afternoon we did an investigation to see which things would float and which would not.

The children had to predict which would float and stand by the sign "yes". If we thought things would not sink we stood by the "no" sign. (We are becoming very good readers!) At the end we tried a necklace of Cailin's and Baz's medal. Cailin's necklace was a floater, but Baz's medal did not. What things could you try to see which are floaters or sinkers?
